Empty Bowls, Caring Hearts

17 YEARS and STILL GOING STRONG.

This year’s Empty Bowls/Caring Hearts Dinner Event takes place on Sunday, October 16, at the Moose Hall on 434 Fort William Road in Thunder Bay.  Doors open at 5:00 and Dinner is served at 6:00 P.M.

The tickets cost $30 plus a canned good and are available at Fireweed, George’s Market, the Baggage Building Arts Centre in the Marina and Kabab Village.  The LUF office has some (call 344-5980).

The $30 ticket provides you not only with a simple meal of soup (also vegetarian and vegan), bread, dessert and coffee, tea and water, but also the choice of a locally crafted ceramic bowl, made by members of the Thunder Bay Potters Guild or two place-mats quilted by the Empty Bowls Quilters.  Meal only is $15 and children 12 and under pay $5. The latter two kind of tickets can only be bought at the door.

All the proceeds are shared between the Thunder Bay Food Bank and Shelter House. Almost $300,000 has been raised over the years. Although the money is sorely needed, the focus of this event is on:

-        bringing young and old together for a simple communal meal, prepared and served by Thunder Bay’s finest chefs , restaurants and businesses

-        choosing a handcrafted ceramic bowl, or a set of quilted place-mats to take home

-        being entertained by the Good News Jazz Band

-        increasing our awareness about people who struggle to feed themselves and their families.

The Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship has been a stalwart sponsor of this event. Together with The Thunder Bay Potters Guild and the Empty Bowl Quilters, we are a strong entity. Almost every member and friend of LUF has been involved with Empty Bowls at one time or another, be that as a guest at the meal or doing the dishes, helping collect money at  “Tagdays”, and preparing the hall . Every bit counts. Please lend your support.  It is our sincerest wish that hunger and food insecurity should no longer plague our community and be eradicated from society.

Once again the line-ups at the 15th Annual empty Bowls/Caring hearts dinner were long and steady. Seen here facing the camera are from l-r : Donna Stecky and Tanis Webster representing the potters guild and receiving the dinner tickets. Ellen Olsen (cross armed) represented the community quilters. In between Donna and Tanis one can see the backside of Gerald Graham, our trusted master of ceremonies, who is checking out the Silent Auction table.

Vern Fezau, past owner of "The Good News Cafe", who donated soup at the very first Empty Bowls dinner which was held at Wesley United Church. She continued doing that until she retired from the restaurant business 2 years ago.

A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to successfully run an Empty Bowls/Caring Hearts Dinner event. Seen here is Angie Albers in the Moose Hall kitchen, carefully re-heating the donated soups. There were 12 delectable choices on October 19th.
