Upcoming Services & Events

Our worship services are diverse in nature, utilizing lay members of our congregation, guest speakers from the greater community and occasional visiting Unitarian Universalist ministers and leaders. Community dialogue sometimes follows each speaker, as well as coffee and informal conversation.

Each year, we hold a special Christmas and New years service. A flower communion is held each spring and a water communion each fall. Pagan / Earth-centered services are also held a few times a year. Many of our services feature talented professional musicians, instrumental or vocal, including members of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. The Good News Jazz Band visits us annually, as well.

SUNDAY SERVICES
10:30 am

129 South Algoma Street

Date: January 6
Title: Sawbonna: Setting Our Intentions on Restoritive Justice
Service Leader: Brenda Diebel
Speaker: Margot Van Sluytman
Margot Van Sluytman’s father was brutally murdered when she was only 16 years old. It was an event that changed her life forever. She wrote to express pain and to heal, never knowing it would instigate a passion within her to formulate a new social justice theory: Sawbonna. Resilience, agency, and voice are the foundations of Sawbonna, changing the current model of restorative justice.  Sawbonna is a Zula greeting meaning “I see you.” It acknowledges our shared-humanity in all of its complexity.

Date: January 13
Title: A Grace-Filled Life
Service Leader:
Hanusia Tkaczyk
Speaker: Rev. Suzanne Wasilczuk
Grace is a gift that comes to us unexpected and unbidden.  It is the gift of life itself as well as the surprising gifts that bless our lives.  Perhaps Mary Oliver's approach is best.  Oliver writes, "You can have the other words - chance, luck, coincidence, serendipity.  I'll take grace.   I don't know what it is exactly, but I'll take it."

Date: January 20
Title: Being Jewish in Thunder Bay
Service Leader:
Rosemary Burris
Speakers: Jenny Roth & Debra Gold
The diaspora produces so many different ways of Jewishness.  LUF welcomes two speakers from Shaarey Shomayim Congregation to share some thoughts and experiences: One whose family is conservative, orthodox, and one for whom being Jewish is more of a culture than a religion.

Date: January 27
Title: Recovery: A Spiritual Path Through the Complexities of Life.
Service Leader: Rob Van Wyck
Speaker: Rick Faulconer
Today's speaker looks at the recovery process involving a "spiritual principle of discovering how to ignite that original instruction energy, deeply inside you, regardless of what has stifled it".
