Volunteers for Shelter House

Lakehead Unitarian has prepared and served the Sunday midday meal at Thunder Bay's homeless shelter "Shelter House" for many years. Our turn occurs six times a year - and our committment is

A)    meals are prepared on site, only
B)   Prep starts at 10 am and goes until 1 pm
C)   Servers should come at 1pm and be prepared to serve from 1:20 to 2:30

Sign ups for this important and meaningful was to give back to the community can be made on the list in the back entrance of LUF, or simply by calling the Fellowship Office at 344-5980.

April 2016 Update

The Fellowship prepares and serves the midday meal at Shelter House 6x a year. On the 4th Sunday of every other month. Our next turn is Sunday, April 24. Four people start at 10:30 until 12:45 to prepare the meal. The 2nd shift of four start at 12:45 and serves at 1:15. The shift finishes around 2:30 p.m. Please sign up on the sheet on the south wall at the back entrance. Greg Brumpton is away this month. For more information about this activity contact Pyteke Blaauw at 344-4052 or e-mail blaauw(dot)pyteke(at)gmail(dot)com

We need a minimum of 4 people to prep and 4 to serve but 6 on each team would be ideal.

Food prepared includes soup and salad most times.  Servers usually butter bread and prepare desserts (cutting cakes and pies or put out fruit)

Number of guests have averaged 100 to 150 lately.  They can range from 80 up to 200.

Greg visits the kitchen staff and determines the availability of main course by the Friday before the Sunday.  Thawing is done by the Shelter House kitchen staff.  Also, if possible, a check on Saturday at 4 pm can be helpful to avoid problems.

Dates for 2016 are as follows:  Feb 28; April 24; June 26; August 28; October 23, December 25.
